Meet Krystal Simpson: an experienced developer with a track record of success
Tell us about your role at Fluid?
As a developer at Fluid, my role covers a range of responsibilities – working with customers to build what they need, whether that’s databases, reports, or websites. Databases in particular have been my specialist focus for 10 years. Fluid offered a chance to grow, learn new things and do more of what I enjoy, which is why I joined.
What’s your proudest career moment and personal achievement to date?
My proudest career moment was joining Fluid, moving from a job I was very comfortable in, to something totally new. It felt like a huge change, but it has paid off.
At Fluid I have also attained the Microsoft certification PL300, which is the certification exam for the Power BI Data Analyst Associate, validating my ability to prepare, model, visualise, and analyse data using Microsoft Power BI. Knowing I can do this and have the qualification is something I am proud of.
But my biggest personal achievement is being self-sufficient, having the comfort of knowing I can pay my bills and not worry about where the next cheque is coming from.
How do you keep your technical skills up to date in such a fast-moving industry?
We hold weekly meetings to track emerging trends and trial new technologies as they emerge. At Fluid, we’re encouraged to experiment early – getting hands-on with new tools before they go mainstream and figuring out how they could give us and our clients an edge.
Everyone brings a different skill set, and because we share knowledge openly, there’s always someone on hand to teach you something new. This regular exchange keeps the whole team learning, growing, and evolving alongside the technology itself.
What is the best piece of business advice you have ever been given?
At a previous role, during a particularly stressful moment, a colleague offered some perspective: ‘We’re delivering a service, not putting men on the moon – stay calm.’ It’s a reminder that everything is relative.
What advice would you give to aspiring developers looking to enter the industry today?
Try and get some hands-on experience and don’t wait for others to come to you; look at areas you’re interested in and have a go, even if it’s something small try to develop your skills as much as you can and build your portfolio.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Japanese food – a bento box with gyoza and rice.
What gets you up in the morning other than an alarm clock?
I genuinely enjoy my job, I like the people I work with, and in consulting it’s different all the time, which is great.
The culture makes Fluid different from any other organisation, and everyone will say that. They genuinely recognise that people are their best asset and that when people are happy, they produce good outputs.
They make sure that whenever we get new hires, they fit in really well with the team. They check in to make sure you’re doing okay if you’re working remotely, and they consistently look after you as a person, which then translates so easily into your work.
