Meet Lindsay Cahill: A Senior Business Analyst passionate about process improvement and effective change
Tell us about your career and your journey to Fluid.
I started my career as a receptionist at Shaw Trust, where I later moved on to a few different roles. This led me to discover process mapping – the activity of documenting and visually representing how a business’s processes work, with the aim of understanding, improving, and potentially redesigning it.
I have since held various Business Analyst (BA) roles, first at Hermes as a Junior BA, then progressing to BA. I moved to Capita as a Senior BA and later became a Lead Business Analyst, which included managing a team. While I was on maternity leave, a friend told me about a job opening at Fluid that piqued my interest. I applied, got the job, and I have never looked back, it’s the perfect place for me.
How many years of experience do you have in the tech sector?
18 years. In 2008, I was assigned to a project where we were trying to take a fully paper-based process and systemise it, which meant we had to build a system specifically for that process. I absolutely loved it, and I have continued to enjoy it ever since.
What do you think are the biggest technology or business challenges facing organisations today?
Definitely AI. Everything is moving faster than ever – software can now be built and developed at such a pace that people risk being left behind, unable to keep up.
That’s why managing the people side of change is so important. You need to bring people with you, help them understand what’s changing and give them the support they need to adopt new ways of working. Robust change management makes the transition seamless and significantly reduces resistance to adoption. At Fluid we use the Prosci ADKAR methodology to support people throughout the implementation of new ways of working.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Learning new things is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role, no two projects, or even two days, are ever quite the same at Fluid. My work is fundamentally centred on people: understanding what they do, why they do it, and examining the various dimensions of their processes. My favourite part of the job is documentation, taking information about business processes, requirements, systems, and decisions, and translating it into something clear, accessible, and easy for other teams to act u
What is the best piece of business advice you have ever been given?
A former manager once shared a piece of advice with me that has remained with me throughout my career: “A good Business Analyst will, by the end of a project, be one of the most knowledgeable people in the room. But at the outset, you are not expected to know anything, and that is perfectly acceptable.” This reframing has stayed with me on every project since.
Can you tell us about some of the most memorable projects you have worked on?
Prior to joining Fluid, while working as a contractor, I undertook a project with a golfing governing body, supporting their search for a new system to underpin the testing processes for golf balls and clubs. It was a fascinating project that also afforded me the opportunity to visit some truly beautiful golf courses.
What are your proudest career achievements to date?
One of my proudest achievements came from a project where we were helping a client select a new system. One of the solution providers involved was so impressed with the quality of the work we’d done and the information we’d pulled together that they now bring Fluid in to support them on their own client projects. We’ve since worked with them on multiple projects, which is a real compliment and something I’m very proud of.
